Inlay VS. Onlay: What is the difference?

  • Inlay- An inlay is designed to repair tooth decay or damage that affects a large surface area of the tooth. The inlay helps support the structure of the tooth and seals out future tooth decay.
  • Onlay- An onlay is custom designed to fit into the cusp or crown of a tooth. The onlay is molded into the valleys of the tooth for a tight seal. Many patients develop cavities in the cusp of the molar because it can be difficult to thoroughly clean.
